Gurprit Matharu was born into a family with a passion, commitment and devotion to classical indian sangeet.

Exposed from an early age to the great masters of the day, Gurprit became imbued with a lifelong passion for tabla.

In 1989, Gurprit became a disciple of the late great Ustad Gurmeet Singh Virdee, himself an exponent of the punjab and Benares gharanas.

Through his own devotion and extensive riyaaz, Gurprit went on to become one of his guruji’s most respected students.

With the untimely passing away of his Guruji in 2005 and with it the great loss to the community and the world of tabla, Gurprit was asked by Guruji’s family to take on the responsibility of continuing teaching tabla.

Gurprit has maintained the high standard and legacy of his Guruji’s teachings and holds regular weekly classes for students of all ages and abilities.

In the last few years, Gurprit has performed throughout the UK with some of the leading contemporary UK based classical musicians including the acclaimed vocalist Tofail Ahmed, Leicester’s Sitar gem Rupa Panesar, Ghazal singer Bilal Lalmohamed from Mauritius, Ustad Shahid Khan from Pakistan, Ustad Surinder Khan from India, Ustad Professor Baldev Narang, Ustad Ghulam Shabir Khan (son of the famous Ustad Hussain Baksh) and Bharat Balvali.

His distinctive ability has allowed his to master the art of playing tabla with great ease and confidence.  He has exceptional tonal quality and can switch seamlessly between the different styles of the Punjab, Benares and Farukabad gharanas.

Today, Gurprit is widely acknowledged as one of the Midlands’ foremost tabla exponents.  He continues to delight and entertain audiences whilst focussing his energy on promoting tabla and producing the next generation of classical tabla players.
