Gurprit Matharu was born into a family with a passion, commitment and devotion to classical indian sangeet.

Exposed from an early age to the great masters of the day, Gurprit became imbued with a lifelong passion for tabla.

In 1989, Gurprit became a disciple of the late great Ustad Gurmeet Singh Virdee, himself an exponent of the punjab and Benares gharanas.

Through his own devotion and extensive riyaaz, Gurprit went on to become one of his guruji’s most respected students.

With the untimely passing away of his Guruji in 2005 and with it the great loss to the community and the world of tabla, Gurprit was asked by Guruji’s family to take on the responsibility of continuing teaching tabla.
